A male Rose-Breated Grosbeak passed through here on Friday. I haven't seen him since. Must have continued on north; but what a great looking bird. Now I'm waiting on the seasonal arrival of the Orioles and Hummingbirds.

Very cool, Steve - great looking bird.

Ivory Billed Woodpecker...can't remember other name, the God Almighty Bird or something like that?

<Ivory Billed Woodpecker...> What about it?
{Nature_and_Environment.66.201}: William Lynn {billcorno} Fri, 05 May 2006 21:36:00 EDT (23 lines)
My cat brought in a newly hatched baby bird and it was pretty finished
off. This one cat doesn't eat what it drags in, but it's part of
their nature so I just deal with it.
It's kind of sad, but it must have fallen out of it's nest.
I eventually took it outside, finished it off and buried it.
I'm planning on trying to change my cats to a raw food diet, too.
That's going to be interesting, grinding up chickens and rabbits,
bones and all. And the preferred way of catching them is to hunt them
(rabbits) and raise them (chickens.)
I'm also mostly vegetarian, so this is going to take some getting
used to.
I really like my cats, though, and they are obligate carnivores.
Just can't feed 'em veggies and expect them to make do.
My ramble in nature today...
William Lynn

Your cats should be kept indoors.
{Nature_and_Environment.66.203}: Tom Elliot {telliot} Sat, 06 May 2006 13:51:59 EDT (HTML)
It is doubtful the cat got the chick out of a nest. We always belled
our cats with great jingly collars which pissed the cats off but cut
way down on bird predation.

Anyone know of a dove bird house to build that doves like? For yrs they nest in a sometimes hot spot near my window and I don't think young ones have made it x 3 springs.

Apparently, cassowaries have been dislocated by devastation of their food supply in the aftermath of Cyclone Larry in Queensland and are marauding nearby towns looking for food. This would be less of a problem if there were little birds or not so dangerous to people.
Here is a link I found to a dove nesting cone,
Magillacutty. "http://birding.about.com/library/weekly/aa030603a.htm
" I would love to do that, but would just be providing snacks for
my cats.

Could this be just another effect of global warming and maybe just the
beginning of such events?
I'm hoping not, but it doesn't look good.

Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as important as Yellowstone, activist says President Bush on Thursday is expected to announce plans to create the world's largest marine protected area a group of remote Hawaiian islands that cover 84 million acres and are home to 7,000 species of birds, fish and marine mammals, at least a quarter of which are unique to Hawaii.
The proposed sanctuary encompasses the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, which conservationists describe as the most intact tropical marine region under U.S. jurisdiction.
"This an unprecedented win for endangered Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles, black-footed albatrosses, tiger sharks, the incredible reef corals in these waters, the people of Hawaii and all Americans, now and in generations to come," Elliott Norse, president of the Marine Conservation Biology Institute, said in a statement ahead of the announcement. "Its the start of a new era of protecting places in the sea before theyre degraded beyond recognition. In my opinion, this is the best thing President Bush has done for the environment."

Last Saturday I was walking to the library along the street beside a small enclosed mall. I was struck dumb by seeing a magnificent hawk on the sidewalk beside a car, and the hawk had a dead pigeon in its talons. He must have just caught it as the pigeon was quite clean. Unfortunately, at that moment, a man came rushing out of the mall towards his car which was the one the bird was parked beside, and so the creature took off. He had the pigeon clutched in his talons but not well enough and dropped it - I nearly got beaned, it was that close! So beautiful it was, standing there looking at me as I stood perfectly still watching it. I thought most unkind thoughts about the intruder dashing out of the mall. I hope the hawk came back and fetched his lunch from the road. I think it may be a Red Tail Hawk - there is a pair that circle and spiral in the thermals just north of us, over a city park. They sometimes fly between our buiding and the one beside us. One supper time last summer they flew by, then swooped up, around and spiralled by us again at the 8th floor level! They live in a park not far from us, I think.

Cool annie. Sounds like you got a good close up view of nature in action. The Red Tail Hawk is a magnificent bird. Had one perch on the rail around my front porch one day. That was quite an exciting surprise.

If I can afford a spiffier camera (quoting a friend, there!) next summer, maybe it will have the facility to catch these wonderful birds on the wing.
{Nature_and_Environment.66.213}: Steve {srs} Thu, 28 Dec 2006 09:46:24 EST (4 lines)
Wow, that is exactly what I'm trying to do. Save up for a better digital camera, mostly for taking bird pictures. I've been trying to spread the word to the family...Staples gift cards make an excellent gift. Hope you can get your spiffy camera soon annie.
{Nature_and_Environment.66.214}: annie {oceanannie} Thu, 28 Dec 2006 11:12:11 EST (3 lines)
tee hee - I'll send 'spiffy camera' vibes out to you, and start saving my allowance now for mine! (even at a crone's age, one gets an allowance!!)

Okay! I've done my part. Here's an article I wrote for the fab'o'lus Observer-Reporter, W. PA's hot source of NUZE. This weekend is Audubon's Great Backyard Bird Count. It's not too late to get out there and be a citizen scientist. "http://www.observer-reporter.com/OR/Story/02_15_bird_count" The GBBC url is "http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc".
{Nature_and_Environment.66.216}: Steve {srs} Sat, 17 Feb 2007 08:55:44 EST (2 lines)
Cool Colleen. I have been doing the GBBC and Project Feeder Watch for several years now. It's a lot of fun.

Got to add another bird to my not so impressive life list today. A Rufous-Sided Towhee. At first I thought it was a male Baltimore Oriole, but that would be a way early arrival for here. A closer look at it's white under belly, and consulting a bird ID book, and Rufous it was. Good looking bird.
{Nature_and_Environment.66.218}: eepy post {eepy} Fri, 13 Apr 2007 00:51:28 EDT (4 lines)
I love towhees. Often if you're hiking on a quiet forest trail and you hear what sounds like a dinosaur in the underbrush, just stop for a minute and you're sure to spot a towhee. They are the noisiest things!
{Nature_and_Environment.66.219}: Rich Mason {richpix} Fri, 08 Jun 2007 18:31:32 EDT (HTML)
Amazing what they mimic.
