A male Rose-Breated Grosbeak passed through here on Friday. I
haven't seen him since. Must have continued on north; but what a
great looking bird. Now I'm waiting on the seasonal arrival of the

My cat brought in a newly hatched baby bird and it was pretty finished
off.  This one cat doesn't eat what it drags in, but it's part of
their nature so I just deal with it.

    It's kind of sad, but it must have fallen out of it's nest.

    I eventually took it outside, finished it off and buried it.

    I'm planning on trying to change my cats to a raw food diet, too.
 That's going to be interesting, grinding up chickens and rabbits,
bones and all.  And the preferred way of catching them is to hunt them
(rabbits) and raise them (chickens.)

    I'm also mostly vegetarian, so this is going to take some getting
used to.

    I really like my cats, though, and they are obligate carnivores.
Just can't feed 'em veggies and expect them to make do.

    My ramble in nature today...

Anyone know of a dove bird house to build that doves like? For yrs
they nest in a sometimes hot spot near my window and I don't think
young ones have made it x 3 springs.

Last Saturday I was walking to the library along the street beside a
small enclosed mall.  I was struck dumb by seeing a magnificent hawk
on the sidewalk beside a car, and the hawk had a dead pigeon in its
talons. He must have just caught it as the pigeon was quite clean.

Unfortunately, at that moment, a man came rushing out of the mall
towards his car which was the one the bird was parked beside, and so
the creature took off. He had the pigeon clutched in his talons but
not well enough and dropped it - I nearly got beaned, it was that close!

So beautiful it was, standing there looking at me as I stood perfectly
still watching it.  I thought most unkind thoughts about the intruder
dashing out of the mall.  I hope the hawk came back and fetched his
lunch from the road.

I think it may be a Red Tail Hawk - there is a pair that circle and
spiral in the thermals just north of us, over a city park.  They
sometimes fly between our buiding and the one beside us.  One supper
time last summer they flew by, then swooped up, around and spiralled
by us again at the 8th floor level!  They live in a park not far from
us, I think.

Cool annie. Sounds like you got a good close up view of nature in
action. The Red Tail Hawk is a magnificent bird. Had one perch on
the rail around my front porch one day. That was quite an exciting
surprise.

Wow, that is exactly what I'm trying to do. Save up for a better
digital camera, mostly for taking bird pictures. I've been trying to

Got to add another bird to my not so impressive life list today. A
Rufous-Sided Towhee. At first I thought it was a male Baltimore
Oriole, but that would be a way early arrival for here. A closer
look at it's white under belly, and consulting a bird ID book, and
Rufous it was. Good looking bird.

I love towhees.  Often if you're hiking on a quiet forest trail and
you hear what sounds like a dinosaur in the underbrush, just stop for
a minute and you're sure to spot a towhee.  They are the noisiest
things!
