Not too many years ago, the dream of many people around the world was to emigrate to the United States, "the land of opportunity." Among the thousands of immigrants were the best and the brightest from their native countries. People with degrees in science, medicine, engineering and the like left their countries for different reasons, among them better economic opportunities and challenging jobs in their fields, and found a welcoming country that nurtured their initiatives and innovations.

A new phenomenon is being reported now in the latest issue of Utne (September-October 2004, pages 12-13). The article "Creative- Class Brain Drain: Other countries are luring our best and brightest" by Richard Florida, describes how other countries, instead of the United States, are now the destination of choice for talented workers.

The article is available online at http://www.utne.com/pub/2004_125/promo/11331-1.html

How are those countries luring talented, educated immigrants? Is brain drain a purely academic problem? How extensive is the migration of highly educated workers? Also, is the creative US citizen really fleeing the United States for other countries?

Should you like to discuss the issues presented in this article, join us in the topic {Globe.241} Brain Drain: Where are the best and brightest emigrating now? in the Globe forum.
