Antonia Juhasz
Anti-Corporate Globalization Activist Antonia Juhasz

Will global trade agreements lead to the end of public trusts, public water, and finally public rights? How does global policy work, and what challenges do we face when making decisions about public waters and lands? How will global trade affect the environment? International Forum on Globalization project director Antonia Juhasz works to find alternatives to corporate global trade agreements.

Utne.com has a new look!

Thanks to everyone who responded to our survey last summer.
We've been working hard to incorporate all of your ideas into the
new design, and we think you'll like what you see.

You*ll notice some pretty major changes that embody the new
design of Utne magazine and make the site easier to navigate.
You*ll also see the Web Watch is more prominent on our home
page and that we*re still featuring Web Exclusives but calling
them Web Specials. Featured discussions in the Cafe now get
more prominent play as well.

Check out our new look now at http://www.utne.com

Plus, we're trying to make it a little easier for you to get your Utne
fix. Now you can browse our store, which includes back issues,
books and an Utne poster! Check it out, we'll have more Utne
products coming soon! http://www.utne.com/utne_store

If you have any comments, questions, suggestion, or just want to
tell Sara Buckwitz, our dedicated webmaster who is leaving
Utne.com for new adventures after shepherding us through the
redesign process, post your thoughts in the Feedback Forum at:

Interview: Daniel Quinn
Starts Saturday, December 7

Quinn's thought-provoking, suspenseful novels include his 1991 prize-winning debut Ishmael. His work blends a radical re-examination of civilization's most basic premises and assumptions with the practiced craft of an experienced storyteller. He will be interviewed in the Literature Forum Dec 7-13, followed by an open discussion with Cafe members Dec 14-20.

A week from now, Time magazine will release the name of the 2002
Person of the Year. Check these topics in the Cafe and let us know
your opinion.

     {Currents.1211}:
2002 TIME Magazine Person of the Year: Too Early to Tell?
(Nominations started September of this year).

     {Globe.203.63}:
Who do you think should be TIME Person of the Year?
(Nominate people or organizations from around the world).

     {Media.249}:
     Story/Person of the year
(This topic has been dormant since last year but you can revive
     it.)

Keep in mind that the TIME Magazine criterion for nominations is:

"The person or persons who most affected the news
or our lives, for good or for ill this year..."

UTNE Person of the Year

Think outside the box - Nominate candidates
for the Utne Person of the Year!

Time Magazine's Person of the Year is usually a politician who affects or causes drama on the world stage. For Utne's first annual Person of the Year, let us widen the scope of the search.

Of course, it can be a politician, but let's not leave out the philosopher, writer, religious or spiritual leader, scientist, environmentalist, peacemaker, filmmaker, anyone in the public eye who has had a big impact this year on your personal growth.

Who opened windows for you? Who inspired you? Or, alternatively, who made you so mad that you were driven to activism to combat their ideas or deeds?

When you think of 2002 several years from now, who will be the significant person for you, for the world?

Post your suggestions in {Globe.225} . We will be gathering suggestions until December 29, 2002. Later on, we will conduct an Utne Poll at www.utne.com

{CafeNews.102.13}: Elena Tscherny {etworld} Tue, 31 Dec 2002 12:44:09 EST (3 lines)

The nominations period for the UTNE Person of the Year has been
extended until this Sunday, January 5, 2003. (See posting above for
details). Post your nominations in {Globe.225}.
