Washington States largest known bat colony is tucked away under this abandoned railroad trestle north of Olympia Washington. Here female Yuma and Little Brown Bats cluster together in the trestle above the waters of Puget Sound. A section of trestle and track was removed so that landlubbers would not disturb the bats.
But they dont feed here. They fly south each day at dusk about 18 miles to a fresh water estuary; Capitol Lake in downtown Olympia. Amazing.

I wanna see the bats, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
{Photography.80.803}: Paddrick Mackin {paddrick} Sun, 13 May 2012 11:42:25 EDT (9 lines)
Ive not seen the bats myself, at least at this location which involves about a mile walk along an uneven closed asphalt road, up and down through a conifer forest timed to arrive a bit before dusk when the swarm of bats take to the air. And then you have to retrace your steps in the dark with a handy flashlight to find your way. Ive seen a few isolated bats near dark feeding on flying insects at the fresh water Capitol Lake. Once it gets dark, you cant see them, but you can hear their echo location chirps as they fly about.

Urk, not my idea of wandering around in the dusk! Still, to see them leave the wharf en masse would be a sight almost worth it.

I'm so glad they're protecting that wharf. I love bats! At my last place of residence, there was a pond that attracted bats. There were certain places I could stand next to the pond (at nightfall) and feel the bats whooshing past my head, just inches away. It was magical :-)

Did they build nests in your hair? :~)

I was hoping one would, but I had no takers :-(

I made a few shots where I cropped out the handrail, but I wanted to give an idea of the overall scene, and it was virtually impossible to do that without getting part of the rail in the picture...

Well, I've been known to tug on a little Yukon Jack to get me through troublesome times, when Corona just isn't enough.
