Wheels on the Web

What other cars are in that market segment? The Chevy SS doesn't have
anywhere near that horsepower nor does the Taurus SHO. And the Charger
doesn't and isn't going to have anywhere near the luxury doogaws of an
AMG or M or R sedan from Mercedes, BMW or Audi. I guess it kind of falls
in with the Viper which sorted of created and was the sole occupier of
it's own segment, a hyper powered roadster with only the minimal safety
and drivetrain features and accoutrements.

The Camaro Z/28 will be 500 and change.

{Wheels.5.3398}: Joe Gordon {darmund} Fri, 15 Aug 2014 19:36:58 EDT (4 lines)

Yeah, but the Charger is a sedan, the Camaro is a coupe. It'll be
interesting to see how soon there will be a mass produced car with 1,000
hp for sale from a major car company, not a sports car marque like
Lamborghini/Ferrari/McLaren/Buggatti.

{Wheels.5.3399}: Jil {rabbit} Fri, 15 Aug 2014 19:53:29 EDT (1 line)

Yes, but the Challenger's a coupe.

Neat new feature coming to the C7 Corvette's Performance Data
Recorder. A valet mode so you have proof that the valet(s) took your
car for a spin instead of leaving it parked in the lot.

Like the SSR wasn't ugly enough ...

People from Texas are morons. Lamborghinis are ugly enough straight from the factory so why must you do this? http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/gold-lambo-in-houston-1628754484

I saw a pink Escalade done in that stuff the other day, too.

Ha!

In other news, the new MX-5 has been announced!

I like it.

Just saw photos, and I think it's gorgeous.

But Mazda is sending me info on 2016 cars. Ye gods. No wonder I never
know what day it is.

I've been known to write checks and then had to change the year on
them, especially in the second half, when next year's models all
start hitting my in-box.

I'm kinda disappointed in the new look of the Miata. They've gone hard
core aggressive on the front, as if they were trying to alienate as many
women as possible. Used to be a cute looking car. No longer.

Really cool interactive chart by Firestone on the history of car companies in the US. It shows who owned whom as well as other stuff. http://www.firestonetire.com/story-americas-top-car-brands/

Neat Firestone graph!

I'm on the fence about the tuned electric motor noise. Yes, it would
be nice if there were some audible way of knowing that this isn't your
typical Tesla Model S, but to me it sounds like a really loud RC car
now. Ha!

One of the first cars to hit the road with Apple's CarPlay automotive
"infotainment" system is a Ferrari FF that's been delivered to a customer.

I'm really surprised that there hasn't been ANY pushback by consumers
and car buyers over Apple/Google stuff being put into cars in terms in
of the data being collected and who collects it and who they share it
with, but then again it's pretty clear only the pundits and reporters
gave a fuck about Snowden and his leaks about what the NSA and
companies collect and do with Internet related data.

Goddamn sheep.

And before you start, so what if it's in every new car. There are tens
of millions of used cars out there that don't have any of this stuff
locked into the electronics.

--------

{Wheels.5.3418}: Joseph Kang {jsk} Sun, 14 Sep 2014 21:22:43 EDT (8 lines)

It doesn't need to be in every new car, people have SMART PHONES.
Those are already doing the same job. And, before smart phones, to a
much more coarse degree, you could track people with plain old cell
phones. It took more effort because you had to triangulate between
three towers, but considering the number of towers in this country...
Don't forget OnStar and similar services direct from the manufacturers.

That particular Pandora's box got opened long ago.

--------

{Wheels.5.3419}: Joe Gordon {darmund} Mon, 15 Sep 2014 21:41:45 EDT (7 lines)

But smart phones aren't connected directly with your cars electronics
and don't monitor everything about your car including how fast you are
going and can't transmit that information to say your insurance company
and thus cause them to raise your rates or cancel your policy because
they discover that you drive an average of 30 mph over whatever the
speed limit happens to be. These Apple and Google systems already have
been working with insurance companies.

They say NOTHING can kill an original VW Beetle.

They say wrong.
