Kai - this isn't really a photography related question, more a forum
related question but I couldn't figure out where else to ask it.  We
have topics for cityscpaes, natural landscapes and poeple pictures.
I was wondering whether we could have 2 more topics - one for pets
and another for wildlife (including birds, of course) shots?

Hazel - I knew Kai had put some thought into this forum so I thought
it best to ask before starting them.  I always like it when topics
seem to grow out of some kind of consensus.

I'd like to see a Q and A topic, like a laboratory, or something
like that, where people could post a photo that has something wrong
with it, and people could help them fix it (or use the correct
light/settings next time).

I'm just not sure what to call it.

And maybe a topic called In the Garden, Field, and Woods for plants.

I have other image editing software, but the thing I really love about
Irfanview is its way of letting you flip through a folder (or a memory
card!) as if through an album.

This feature makes it wonderfully handy for looking through the images
you've just taken, that are still on the flash card, deciding which
ones to save.  The keyboard shortcuts are so easy to use.  You can
just open the F drive, select the first file, and push the arrow keys.

If you like something, you just type an "s" and if you hate it, type
the "del" button.  So easy.

With the little thumbnails offered by my Nikon software, it's a little
hard to be sure whether the picture is worth saving.  I like getting
the big image.

I don't have a digital camera, but get my pictures on CD when the
film is developed.

BTW, I love the idea of both a "fix-it" topic and a macro topic. I do
lots of macros in my garden.

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but . . .

I'm looking for a good online source for simple but elegant
contemporary frames for hanging photos.  A few (not many) years ago,
I got catalogs from a company whose name I cannot remember no matter
how hard I try but that was very good:  a sort of Levenger, but for
photography rather than reading/books.  They had nice, simple,
natural-wood frames, including some with oversize matting and matting
for grouping related photos in elegant and striking ways.  They must
be out of business since I don't seem to get the catalogs anymore,
even though I bought a few things from them.

I've wasted several hours on google searches of various combinations
and keep coming up with things that don't come close to what I'm
looking for.

Any ideas or favorite sources?

I don't know about the mats, Frank, but you might try Daniel Smith.
(It's an artist;s supply place.) They offer lots of frames. Most are a
do-it-yourself assembly that any child could put together, and they
have many styles, including contemporary wood in different styles and
colors (including unfinished maple). Good quality. They're very
reasonably priced and you order them by the exact dimensions you want.

I think they do offer mats too, but if not, any framing shop will cut
a custom mat for you for not a whole lot of $$.

Daniel Smith is at 1-800-426-6740. They're in Seattle. Free
catalogue.

You also might try Light Impressions. They're a company that
specializes in archival photo presentation and storage. (Don't have
their number handy - you can probably find them online.) They're kind
of pricey, though the quality is high. They also have a free
catalogue.

Thanks.  I looked at both those sites and both do seem to offer high-
quality framing.

What this phantom catalog from the late 90s offered that I haven't
found anywhere else was really striking frame/mat combinations.  That
would relieve me of some of the design thinking, since I could just
browse and select something from what was a very attractive menu.  I
know I can achieve some good looks by custom-spec'g the end products,
but this place had better ideas than I tend to come up with on my
own, and they were mass-produced so the cost was affordable.

Heh.  No wonder they went out of business.

We're re-doing the interior of our house, including the art
hangings.  I'm thinking of putting a few (5-10) of our better photos
up in prime spots, sometimes in groups.  I know the standard ways of
doing that, and that may be what I end up with - but I'd consider
something bolder/more interesting if it were easy.

I can't remember the  name of one company like that--a bit of
furniture, lots of print-and-negative boxes, scrapbooks, frames.  I'm
not sure if they are still doing much in the way of frame things now,
though.

I've even ordered from them.

I've been having trouble during the last month with my digital
camera. I'm getting out-of-focus shots because I can't see the
preview screen in the bright sun.
