Wheels on the Web

My brother owned Chrysler dealerships. He said when he got in a
Superbird, it sat so long on the lot that he took off the wing and
nose cone before he could sell it.

Ha!

--------

{Wheels.5.3370}: Jil {rabbit} Tue, 01 Jul 2014 12:24:49 EDT (2 lines)

And if the car's still around, I wonder if the owner has figured out
exactly what he has!

IIRC correctly the Superbird is one of the dew production cars that
actually needed the wing to keep the car from flipping at high speed

--------

{Wheels.5.3372}: Jil {rabbit} Tue, 01 Jul 2014 18:23:25 EDT (2 lines)

It did provide downforce, but I doubt it was required to avoid
flipping, at least at any speeds it would reach on regular roads.

Mercedes coming out with $1,000,000 S-Class Pullman. Gotta move those Maybachs somehow. "http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-07- 03/mercedes-benz-s-class-pullman-1-million-luxury-car"

Several companies are aiming luxury models at the Chinese markets;
I'm guessing we won't see one here.

Cars that would have been ten years old (based on 2004 MY) this year:

Joseph, interesting list. I remain kind of mystified as to why sales of
ALL the Japanese sports cars fell off a cliff at pretty much the same
time. The Supra, Celica, Prelude, RX, all of them. And it wasn't like
there was a recession here in the US, the economy was humming along
grandly.

{Wheels.5.3379}: Doug White {dwhite} Fri, 11 Jul 2014 10:07:57 EDT (1 line)

Wow, that Riviera is way out there.

--------

{Wheels.5.3380}: Jil {rabbit} Fri, 11 Jul 2014 11:09:10 EDT (4 lines)

The Aveo copy on the list isn't quite accurate. The Sonic isn't a
rebadged Aveo. It's an American-made car (and quite good, actually).
The car still built in Korea is the Spark (which isn't quite good,
actually).

And I need to bleach my eyes after that Riviera/Tucker ... whatever
it's supposed to be.

Nice article. I really like the transition of how the old cars became
the new ones.

My new favorite car site: http://autoblopnik.com/

It's a sendup of car reviews and news, and in some cases it's more of
an inside joke that some people won't get, but it's hilarious. I love
the fake ads ... the "Bick Skruth" is a slap at Jack Baruth, an
American auto journalist who is so full of himself, it's hard to get
him through a door. He also spends a lot of pixels talking about how
he's the only auto writer on the planet who isn't on the take from
automakers (although I've seen him belly up to more than one
automaker-sponsored bar...).

Nice! Thanks for that one. Looking forward to perusing it.

As far as American auto journalists being full of themselves, David E
Davis and Brock Yates set that bar REALLY, spectacularly high. No,
higher than that. When you spend no less than 3 of your monthly columns
in one calendar year going on and on about how you deliberately set out
to fuck up a shitty Ford rental car as badly as you could you've got
issues. (That was Yates by the way.)

--------

{Wheels.5.3390}: Jil {rabbit} Tue, 29 Jul 2014 08:24:47 EDT (4 lines)

I've not read a lot of Yates' stuff, but I definitely know his
reputation.

I met him once, but just a handshake and a how-do.

--------

{Wheels.5.3391}: Joe Gordon {darmund} Tue, 29 Jul 2014 14:28:17 EDT (5 lines)

Davis got a couple of pages in David Halbertsam's The Reckoning where he
did NOT come off well with his views on american car buyers and
journalists and auto execs where he laughed and pointed at the execes
because they liked Blue Nun wine, as if that singular choice defined
their entire life.
