Whether you are a hunter or support hunting...or not...it is probably safe to say that it is harder to "hunt" with a camera/ Not so much because getting a picture is harder (although it can be hard enough), but because getting a good picture is harder.
It would be a little easier if wild critters were willing and able to cooperate when it
comes to background and lighting and composition and the like...but...

Still want a better camera, with a good lens or three, and a decent tripod. It can be frustrating to be limited by a basic camera when the right equipment could make a decent shot a much better one.
One thing nice about box turtles is that they don't move fast!

That turtle is a beautiful animal, and that's a nice shot. It looks like a Sierra Club calendar photo ;-)

Kai - what size was that turtle? Great photos - thanks for starting the topic. So how about some of the Galapagos turtles?

****
Here's one of my backyard critters. I spent nearly an entire compact flash card on this gal just to get one or two in focus . . .
{Photography.23.8}: Kai Hagen {kai} Tue, 05 Aug 2003 02:16:20 CDT (HTML)
What great color.
I know what it is like to take a lot of shots of a butterfly or moth to get one that works right. Wasn't such a problem with my SLR, but I still have some issues getting good close ups with my nothing-fancy digital.
-----
Perhaps not a favored bird, Diane, but grackles are beautiful. When the sun hits them just so...

> Kai - what size was that turtle?
The shell was probably about seven inches long. We have a fair number of box turtles around here.

Thanks. I have scanned a number of pictures from the Galapagos, but, for some reason, none of the *tortoises,* yet.
I also have some night images I took of nesting sea turtles in Costa Rica that I ought
to scan at the same time!

Hazel that knocked my socks off! It scrolled down just right too.... your words, then the tip of her wing (kind of dull), then wowie the colors and textures.

BTW, Hazel, your butterfly is gorgeous.

Thanks, you guys! (wish all my pics turned out like that one). The thing that's interesting (and frustrating to photo) about that species of butterfly is that all the color is one the underside of the wings. The tops of the wings are just a dull brown. So you have to wait and wait and wait and hope she puts them together at some point. Diane, I love the dynamic upside down composition in that pic, and the lilac pink/blue and brown color combination! Moths are fun. I've got one on my CF card that I'll post a little later.
{Photography.23.13}: Kai Hagen {kai} Tue, 05 Aug 2003 13:53:00 CDT (2 lines)
I love the way the colors work together, Diane. For example, the purple hues in the flowers, in the background and in the moth's eye.
{Photography.23.14}: Which Hazel? {hazel2} Tue, 05 Aug 2003 14:27:30 CDT (5 lines)
I went back to look at the moth's eye - you're right, it's dark blue violet! Cool. Diane, what was the background - the sky? It's such a yummy color and works so well with the rest of the photo.
{Photography.23.15}: Diane Hamilton {dianeh} Tue, 05 Aug 2003 17:59:23 CDT (10 lines)
I can't see the color of the moth's eye - maybe because I am on my laptop - it's a large screen but maybe not bright enough? I'll have to remember to look at it when I am at work. The background was the screen (black mesh) of my screens in porch. I was surprised how it looked. I was using the macro. And the flowers are my butterfly bush. We get tons of monarch butterflies here (not in my yard but here at the Cape) in the fall. Maybe I'll be able to get some of them to pose for me.

I've gotten a few lovely moths to cooperate with me lately.
Here's one:

I hate you guys! :-) (OK, "jealousy" is a more appropriate term than "hate".) Lots of GREAT pics here!

They are very cool. I like the orange one the best.

That's a beautiful insect. Wow!

Thanks, guys.
Me too, Diane...because of how it contrasts with the green and dark background.
Actually too that one standing on our porch.

Your moths are wonderful, Kai. I like the grackle. and the other moth and the butterfly.
