Tales from the dark side...

I'll post this in case anyone from my part of the mountains is reading. PLEASE NOTE: When it is foggy, or icy, or just dark out, crawling up the crack of my car's ass will NOT make me drive faster. It will actually make me go *slower* because now I am blinded by your brights 2 feet from my rearview mirror(that does not have a night adjustment) and side mirror, and I need to slow down to adjust for my impaired vision. Please feel free to go around me if you want to exceed the speed limit, or back the hell up so I can see and go back up to doing the speed limit myself.

If you see me coming toward you and you want to get into my lane,
either wait for me to pass or be freakin' positive that your car has
enough gumption to GET OUT OF MY WAY! ParTICularly if there in
NOTHING behind me.

I thought a little hickey to do an occasional caltrops drop would be handy.

Here's mine for today: the lane in the middle is NOT for making left- hand turns.

Hahaha! Yikes! Nothing too road rage inducing for me this morning.

You have more than one lane?! damn.

This needs to be plastered in ALL media outlets!!!! Do The RIGHT Thing! The NMA is encouraging lane courtesy (also known as lane discipline). As part of this campaign, we designated June as Lane Courtesy Month and is kicked off the campaign with the slogan "Do the RIGHT Thing!" Below you will find information on lane discipline and our campaign. http://www.motorists.org/right/index.html

<<The right lane of a three lane highway - at least in the US - is for ramp traffic and for people going slow. The center lane is for normal traffic, and the left lane is for passing. >> I guess we'll just have to disagree. That is wrong, wrong, wrong, and incorrect too, but hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion, I guess...;-) For one thing, as we were taught at BMW driving school, the middle lane is the most dangerous place to drive, since you don't have an escape lane.

Well, Michael, it does require a modicum of common sense. Our highways are just as overloaded as your interstates in many areas, and it isn't always possible to do it the correct way. When there's too much traffic, yes, you have to use the other two lanes. When the traffic is lighter, or it's moving well, then you stay to the right except to pass. And the BMW driving school *was* about being a safe and law-abiding driver. I'm surprised at your reaction, actually. Is it because you dislike some people who drive these cars that you think the school is out there teaching us how to speed and pull donuts?

<< No, I think it's teaching people how to drive for their own protection (ref: 'escape lane') at the expense of being better drivers in the socially responsible sense.>> Obviously our view of "socially responsible" is completely at odds. But I'm sure even Volvo calls their method "defensive driving", don't they? As for referring to an "escape lane", how is that anything other than being socially responsible? If you're in the middle lane, and a driver from the left starts to bear over and you've got a car on your right, it isn't just about your protection. You're now involving two other vehicles. Move to the right and you strike that driver; stay in your lane and the other driver strikes you. I fail to see how alerting drivers to an "escape lane" is in any shape or form a selfish act. << Having one lane for traffic and two lanes for passing makes as much sense as putting all the slow cars in the left lane.>> It does if drivers use the three lanes correctly. Slow traffic in the left lane. Overtaking traffic in the middle lane, which moves to the right when finished passing. Traffic moving faster than the middle lane passes in that one. Bottom line: if someone passes you on the right, you're in the wrong lane.

I would agree with this.
Exit ramps are usually designed with a "decel" lane in addition to the "thru" lanes. The length of the "decel" lane will be based on the design speed of the highway and that of the ramp. Exemptions may be required in cities where right-of-way is constricted.
I don't know the current policy, but there have been times when tractor-trailers were being encourged to use the leftmost lane to get more even wear of the pavement and extend the time between resurfacings.
With the lighter traffic in the rural West, I often use all lanes to boost the "design speed" of the curves so my SUV doesn't roll over... Saves gas by shortening the distance too!
;-)

The safe capacity of the highway will be enhanced if the various speeds of traffic segregate into laminar flow with slower but greater densities on the right instead of mixing it up in the middle.
Declaring a hypothetical someone to be jerk fits well with the topic title, however.
;-)

If you are in the way, it doesn't matter what lane you are in, or what
speed you are traveling, and it qualifies you for the "jerk" tile as
much as anything else would. With such creative thinking as you are
exhibiting, the right lane is definitely safer, though you might want
to consider the paved shoulder with the ditch as an escape lane. And
even then keep your eyes peeled for the "jerks" that might be engaged
in a mowing operation.
