Some of you have been sending me images to post as attachments (as I have encouraged).

Happy to receive them...and those to come. But I'd like to request that you not send any to me for the next few days, until Tuesday.

It has been brought to my attention - thanks, Diane - that most of
use have been using URLs for embedding attached images
that do not work for unregistered guests reading the forum.

They have been able to open the attachment, and see it that way,
but apparently not see it in the post.

Diane suggested an easy and elegant solution. Please make an effort to
embed/post your attached images using this format:

You can add the photo's name after the last slash, but it isn't necessary.

If you been hearing some rumblings and grumblings about the future of
The Cafe, here's where the 'official' discussion is occuring:

And here's the first post from our spokesperson host, Peter:

Peter {palan} Tue, 23 Aug 2005 15:01:03 CDT (31 lines)

All right-- I'm here in a semi-officialish host capacity to let folks
know what's going on. I'm going to start with the basics, and then
I'll stick around and/or be back early and often to answer questions.

Here are the basics.

1) We have received our official notification that Utne is cutting
the cafe loose.

2) Hosts are engaged in a fairly active (i.e. posting discussion
almost at the level of real time chat) discussions to prepare the
cafe for restructure/relocation.

3) Two hosts have been given administrative capabilities so that
stuff can get done, both in terms of changes and housekeeping.

4) As a result of all of the above, some technical glitches and human
errors were made, most of which have already been noted by patrons.

5) We are going to try to keep everyone informed.

Things have been unfolding very quickly on several different fronts,
and it has taken us a bit of time to figure out what needs to be done
and figure out who's going to take care of what.

As mentioned above, I'll be hanging in here to answer and respond.
Sometimes the answer is going to be some version of "I don't know,
I'll try to find out" or "Nobody knows yet." And in the early stages
the answers have sometimes changed in just a few hours. But we are
trying to chart a course to not just save the cafe we know, but
create a cafe that is better and stronger than before.

You may have noticed the new header on this forum's home page. The
Cafe is moving to a new server, and changing its name to the New
Cafe. A new forum has been created to discuss this change, and to
solicit ideas and suggestions for making the Cafe an even better
place to visit and interact. Please visit the new forum and add
your thoughts to the ongoing discussion Thanks!

The Cafe's upcoming move to a new server has been formally announced.
The applicable post is at {New_Cafe.9.4} but here are some the
relevent details:

There's been significant progress re. the Utne Institute's official
handover of Cafe Utne to the New Cafe.

We now have a move date -- Monday, Feb. 27.

The Cafe will be offline for 12 hours during the move. If things go
better than expected, we'll be back up somewhat earlier.

This server move will be similar to when we changed from
to Following the move, users will have to use to access the NewCafe. You may want to create a
bookmark for that site now so you can find your way later.

Hi all. Coyote was looking for a new co-host and I graciously
volunteered. Good to be on board.

And efficient Diane beat me to the punch of announcing her as the new
co-host of the Photography forum. Welcome, Diane!

Hey everyone! There's a nifty new forum at the New Cafe.
It's called {AfterHours}. Check it out!

You need a place to go where the lights are always on, where you can
always find someone to talk to. This is the place for nighthawks to
perch for a while. No matter what your time zone, come in after dark
and talk about late-night music, midnight snacks, shift work or just
what the stars look like. In the wee small hours of the morning,
that's the time you'll love it most of all.

greeting to all of you great photographers and friends here at the

In case you haven't noticed the new-ish header at the top of the page,
it's time to cast your votes for the New Cafe board members of your
choice. If you have any questions I might be able to answer re. the
election, feel free to use the General Discussion topic. Thanks!

The banner says:

Polls are now open for the Board of Directors election.
See {Cafe_Improvements_and_Feedback.38.406} for voting directions.

{Photography.1.20}: Coyote {coyote} Wed, 27 Aug 2008 15:17:50 CDT (12 lines)

If you're planning on voting in the Cafe board members election, don't
wait until the last minute. Our vote tallier reports this:

"It appears that there can be some delay between the time a ballot is
sent from a member's e-mail client and the time it is received and
time-stamped by the newcafe webmail client. In other words, if a
ballot is mailed shortly before the deadline, it might not get
delivered until some time after the deadline."

Above info culled from this post:

Voting for Cafe Ombudsman is now open. Please read the following instructions, carefully, to ensure your vote is counted.

The two candidates are:

Clydie {clydie}
Allan Mcdougall {allan21}

Voting will end at noon, Jan 8, 2009. To be valid, all votes must be sent to via the email listed in your user profile. Only the election officials, James Files and David Kurtzman will be aware of who you vote for and will keep this info confidential. Unless the email accompanying your vote requests otherwise, we will post that your vote has been received and approved, or not approved. Please include your username.

You can read the candidates' statements here: {Ombudsman_Election_2009.4.1-}

Note: Clydie's statement was copy/pasted from another topic, so it's a tad confusing, as it looks like it's James' statement. But he's not a candidate.

{Photography.1.22}: Coyote {coyote} Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:35:08 CST (7 lines)

Please make sure your vote for Ombudsman has been received and
confirmed by reading through the posts in the following topic. If you
do not see your name listed, or if you see that your vote was received
via an email address that does not match the address in your Cafe
profile, please take remedial action asap. Thank you!

There's about a week left for y'all to cast your vote for the person
you'd like to see become the New Cafe ombudsman.

The candidates are: Calli {caliente} and Colleen {cole2u}

In the header of this page, there's a link to the Ombuds election
forum where (in *that* forum's header) you'll find the email address
to use for submitting your vote.

For your convenience, I'll include it here:

*** When you vote, make sure to do so using the same email account
that's listed in your profile, and include your user ID.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to email me,
and I'll do my best to answer them. My email address is in my profile.

It's time to vote for new, New Café board members!

Details re. how to cast your votes: {Cafe.Elections.Board_2010.14}

Other info, including candidate statements: {Cafe.Elections.Board_2010}

Of note: Some of the candidates posted their statements in their bio
information as opposed to the topic designated for candidate
statements. And some posted theirs in the debate topic.

I, personally, clicked on all the candidates userids first, to read
the candidate statements 'hidden' there so I wouldn't miss any. Then I
visited the other topics.
