Welcomes and Introductions

{Nature_and_Environment.2.1}: Kai Hagen {kai} Thu, 19 Feb 2004 22:43:41 CST (HTML)

After all these years, we are finally creating separate spaces for {Nature} and the {Environment} at the Cafe.

Welcome to the new Environment forum!

Please take a minute to stop in here, say hello, and share a little bit about yourself and your interest in environmental issues.

Hi y'all! Good to see the new format, and a fresh start! Terrific
idea! I'll be around!

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.3}: Kai Hagen {kai} Tue, 24 Feb 2004 15:58:04 CST (HTML)

Welcome to our new digs, James!

I suspect that I should acknowledge my existence. I prefer not to be
a lurker.

I try to protect our world in my small ways. And it's the little
things that add up. Just the other day I got a phone call from one of
those chemical spraying lawn companies. They wanted to do my lawn. I
watch them show up across the street weekly, even in the winter. I
have the corner lot, and it's big, so I'm sure they thought they'd
make bunches of money off me. I let them know, firmly but not rudely,
that I didn't believe in spraying our world with chemicals and that
they'd better keep away from my property. My little bit to save
the world.

Just watch. The same-sex marriage thing is going to grab the Big Time
Spotlight, with a constitutional 'mendment in progress..., etc. And
while we argue over who can form what kind of union with whom, the
ice caps melt, the ocean currents slow to a halt -- threatening to
turn much of Europe into Siberia.... And that news is under the radar.

Perhaps Kerry will remember the Poles.

Hi. Glad to see this forum happening. Thanks.

{Nature_and_Environment.2.8}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:18:06 CST (9 lines)

Just happened to find this new conference, and think it is a great
idea to gather the threads - so to speak.

Am the flight operations environmental coordinator for the airline
I work for, and am also generally interested in the environment and
our treatment of it.

Am currently working on our environmental report for 2003, our 7th
annual report on environmental matters.

Sounds like interesting work, Helge.

Glad to see you guys drop in. Welcome Helge, Petre and Jan!

I feeling of happiness comes over me when the green of this forum
arrives on my screen.

Hello All ! My partner and I just bugged out of corporate NYC and
moved to Texas to do the solar house & permaculture thing. The house
is using about 1/4 as much electricity as our neighbor. I have not
purchased the solar panels yet as it seems my electric coop is making
it rather difficult ( they want to double my connection charges and
only give me 1/2 credit for the electricity that the panels produce ).

I may have to go guerilla style ;)

Also looking to connect with greens in TX... bye y'all

{Nature_and_Environment.2.12}: Kai Hagen {kai} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 13:34:08 CST (HTML)

Welcome to the new forum, David...and to the Cafe.

Where in Texas are you David?

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.14}: Suzanne Griffith {sggriffith} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 14:35:09 CST (2 lines)

Hi, I'm Suzanne, and I forgot to introduce myself. I'm the same
color as the background ;-)

{Nature_and_Environment.2.15}: Kai Hagen {kai} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 17:43:07 CST (HTML)

Welcome to you, too, Enrique.

I see from your bio that you were at Carleton College the exact same years I was at St. Olaf, just across town!

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.16}: Small World... {gesualdo} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 17:46:00 CST (1 line)

Uff Da! My sister even married an Olie ya hey!

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.17}: Kai Hagen {kai} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 17:53:35 CST (HTML)

So did my wife!

Wait a minute...so did I.

(Except it's "Ole.")

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.18}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Thu, 26 Feb 2004 02:28:40 CST (2 lines)

Is that the term for a Norwegian? Since you mention St. Olaf that
is?

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.19}: Uff da! {kai} Thu, 26 Feb 2004 02:38:07 CST (HTML)

It's a term for St. Olaf students and alumni.

As you would guess, the school has a strong Norwegian connection!

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.20}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Thu, 26 Feb 2004 04:15:21 CST (3 lines)

I knew about St. Olaf, and guessed at a connection... :)

Ola Nordmann (and Kari Nordmann) are the arctypical Norwegians...

{Nature_and_Environment.2.21}: Kai Hagen {kai} Thu, 26 Feb 2004 08:24:24 CST (HTML)

"Ole and Lena" are the subject of many jokes in Minnesota.

There are (too!) many sites like these:

http://www.surfminnesota.net/olelena.html
http://www.newnorth.net/~bmorren/olelena.html

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.22}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Fri, 27 Feb 2004 01:53:20 CST (1 line)

Ah! I see! Ole and Lena are Swedes! :)

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.23}: Kai Hagen {kai} Fri, 27 Feb 2004 02:19:24 CST (1 line)

Swedes or Norwegians, interchangably!

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.24}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Fri, 27 Feb 2004 02:55:24 CST (10 lines)

Ah! I see, you have not heard about the Great War between Swedes
and Norwegians. Some samples?

- What does the Swedes have that the Norwegians do not? Good
  neighbours!
- Why do Swedes flock to the windows during thunderstorms?
They think someone is taking pictures!

There are thousands of these, curiously enough the Swedes try to
reverse them - but that is of course a joke in itself... ;)

--------

{Nature_and_Environment.2.25}: Kai Hagen {kai} Fri, 27 Feb 2004 08:12:06 CST (HTML)

> you have not heard about the Great War between Swedes and Norwegians

Oh, but I have. Believe me!

In Minnesota, you are more likely to hear Norwegian and Swedish jokes than, say, Minnesota and Iowa jokes (not that you don't hear those, too). Could have something to do with the fact there's no border between them here. :-)
