what--no crown of smoke? last time I saw vesuvio the smoke it seemed permanent. Nice picture--nice lines and colors.

No, no smoke. This was July 2008 as we sailed into Naples. Got lucky with the timing for the sunrise.

A scan from an old photograph I shot from the hydrofoil Sorrento - Capri, looking across the bay of Naples to the volcano. Not a good picture, I realize and confess and admit--just showing what I mean by the crown of smoke. Although I guess it could be just a cumulus buildup over Vesuvio and not smoke at all. Sigh. I guess it's a lousy example in all respects!
