milage and not a huge drop off when towing.

Any turbo's like that. When you're just cruising, it's essentially a
naturally-aspirated engine. But when you put your foot into it,
you're sending in more air and, of course, more fuel.

I was a judge on an event where we pitted the trucks against each
other in driving, towing and hauling, and had electronic fuel
calculators on them. I wish I could find my notes on it, but I recall
the EcoBoost getting terrible mileage when it towed.

Of course, it's all big-picture. Don't buy the EcoBoost if you're
towing all the time. But if you only go out once or twice a year with
the camper, it might be a better choice overall.

I love that 3.7-litre, which Ford doesn't offer anymore (it's now a
3.5-litre non-boost). One year we gave it the award. It seldom showed
up in the press vehicles so I'd never driven it before. I couldn't
get over how nice it was, and it was basically the bottom-line,
entry-level engine. If I'd been buying an F-150 that would have been
my choice, hands-down.

Even now, I'd probably go for the 3.5 rather than the EcoBoost.
Cheaper to buy, I believe, and you don't get that thirst when you
need power. Plus I'm still convinced a naturally-aspirated engine
will have fewer issues down the road.

Yeah, I have always wondered about the effects of wear and tear when
you are pushing all that air and fuel through a small engine. I'm old
school enough to still want to equate cubic inches with power...

They've really beefed up the 2.7, so it should be able to take the
punishment, but I've still heard too many horror stories about older
turbos going south.

The engine has start/stop on it, as well, which shuts it off when
you're idling at a light. You can turn it off, but then it comes back
on by default each time you turn the key.

Back in my gearhead days, engines had distributors. A few years ago, my Vibe hit 100,000 miles, and I told my mechanic to change the plugs, and while he's at it, may as well change the plug wires and distributor cap. He looked at me like I was an idiot and told me that each cylinder had its own coil sitting right on top of the plug. I had no idea. Anyhow, it has left me with a burning question: without a distributor, how does the ignition get its timing info off the crankshaft?

It's all handled electronically. There's a sensor on the crankshaft -
logically named the crankshaft sensor - that determines the crank's
position and then translates that for the control module.

This is mildly terrifying.

Let's say you have a Kia K900 which costs $46,000.

Okay, okay, calm down, it's Kia's luxury car that shares a lot
with the Kia Stinger and Genesis G80. And like luxury cars these
days it comes stuffed to the gills with all sorts of whoops and
doodads and thingees and hoohas and sensors and air fresheners
that cover up the smell of your farts, you get the idea. Now all
that is well and good, but there is an unexpected downside.*

Anyway, let's say you are out toodling around and there is some
unpleasantness the result of which is what the insurance company
terms a "minor left corner front hit."

Okay, that's not THAT bad, you think to yourself, and then you get
to the dealer/repair shop and get the bill and WHAT THE FUCK?!!
$34,000!!!! I could nearly buy another Kia K900. Are you fucking
kidding me?!

Sadly no.

The reason for this atrocity of a repair bill is all those
aforementioned doodads and hoohas and thingees and sensors. Ain't
technology grand?

*Should it really be unexpected though? I think not.
