Welcomes and Introductions |
{Nature_and_Environment.65.1}: Kai Hagen {kai} Thu, 19 Feb 2004 22:30:28 CST (HTML)
Please take a minute to stop in here, say hello, and share a little bit about yourself and your connections to the natural world.
Even if you've been a part of the old Nature forum for years, consider yourself
encouraged to introduce yourself in the new Nature forum.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.2}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:27:04 CST (6 lines)
An old Nature forum user, and was surprised to suddenly see the old forum become read-only. Enjoy reading about, seeing photos and taking photos of and trips into nature. Even my back garden is a part of nature, and I enjoy seeing squirrels and several species of birds there.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.3}: Kai Hagen {kai} Wed, 25 Feb 2004 10:09:39 CST (HTML)
I know what you mean about the old Nature forum. I've been participating there for
more than eight years, and there are a lot of great conversations. The good news is
that they're still there - archived, but as accessible to registered folks as ever.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.4}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Thu, 26 Feb 2004 02:21:07 CST (3 lines)
Hi Kai I saw that, and to my surprise I saw that my "joined date" was 8 years ago just recently... :)

Hi Helge, Kai. I was new to the old forum last week, and now, I guess I'm still new. I have a very tight connection with nature- to be happy, I need to spend most of my day outside. Most of the activities I enjoy revolve around the outdoors- hiking, cycling, gardening, etc... I like to write about nature, and take photographs of nature, but I don't consider myself a writer or a photographer (all things come with practice, though). I'm a Thoreau fan, and frequently reread Walden (although, I think the reason is really homesickness- I miss the woods I grew up in, and he fills that gap for me well). I'm trying to learn how to become a birder- I'm finding it more difficult than I had thought it would be.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.9}: Helge Hafstad {hhaf} Fri, 27 Feb 2004 01:34:04 CST (1 line)
Not certain what a birder is, do you mean birdwatcher?
{Nature_and_Environment.65.10}: Kai Hagen {kai} Fri, 27 Feb 2004 08:16:01 CST (HTML)
"Birder" is a common term for "birdwatcher" over here, Helge.
Stick with it, Karen. It get's easier and easier, and more and more rewarding.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.11}: Karen Iwamoto {kai28} Tue, 02 Mar 2004 20:30:20 CST (1 line)
I hope it does get easier- because I am just not quick enough yet.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.12}: Kai Hagen {kai} Wed, 03 Mar 2004 12:13:05 CST (HTML)
Sort of like when I first had an interest - oh so many years ago - in learning more about trees. I started with basic identification, of course. And, at that time, when I would be comparing leaves side by side, with a guide book in hand, I never would have believed I'd get to the point...before too long...of being able to tell them apart in mid-winter, from a hundred yards, at sixty miles an hour!
It may seem like a bewildering amount of barely distinguishable small birds and bird
sounds right now. But that's going to change!

I am new to this forum today, and still finding my way around. I am a custom furniture designer and maker living in Canada, and feel a deep affinity for trees. Because of this I am extensively involved in a variety of initiatives that focus on matters related to forest sustainability. Currently I am involved in the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which is an international not-for-profit organization founded in 1993 by environmental groups such as Greenpeace, The Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.14}: Kai Hagen {kai} Sun, 14 Mar 2004 18:48:18 CST (HTML)
I've been familiar with the Forest Stewardship Council since it's inception - I worked for a little while at Scientific Certification Systems (early nineties), one of the listed certifiers.
Am glad it's been able to gain a solid credible foothold in a an important niche.
How are you involved?

hi I am from south africa (umzanzi afrika) was a professional archaeologist, still have stuff to publish, but have been a practising visual artist 4 the last 10 years. I paint abstract/fantasy, quite realistic landscapes, but, as a student of human evolution am quite passionately interested in the all that is involved in responding to landscape/place/a time. landscape in the evolution of the aesthetic senses .... and what has happened to it in cities. I stay in an old radio station on top of a hill just outside a small university town in the southern cape. I have just joined this cafe and my first impression based on a half hour browse is that there is a large, quite marked, down-on-men vibe in your culture. which leaves me stone cold and ... Ok, thats my intro. will continue browsing to try find the right conversations Anton

And from a woman's point of view - try Nook - we love men there.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.19}: Tapani Järveläinen {pena} Thu, 12 Aug 2004 01:49:11 CDT (10 lines)
Hi, I'm new here. I'm an nature lover, explorer and amateur entomologist. Just now I'm wondering where you can do real expeditions? Are there still white spots in our planet? I think that the dual distinction between nature and culture (travel) is blinding us. There can be areas in-between - gray spots. They are different kind of border areas, between mental and material. There can be a culnature. I'm not yet sure what that means... pena
{Nature_and_Environment.65.20}: annie {oceanannie} Thu, 12 Aug 2004 06:14:21 CDT (11 lines)
Hello pena...I don't visit in here too often,as I'm a city dweller and have few contacts with Mother Nature now that I live in a condo unit without a balcony. Nice to see you. I hope you'll enjoy all the topics. The topic where I spend my few minutes a day is #6 Word Association, Nature's Way, which gets bogged down now and then, as it is right now!! Our hosts will welcome you, too, I know. Have fun here, and in other forums, too, like Nook. Nook welcomes everyone and we have a lovely time in there.

Hi. Haven't been to Nature since the change from what's now Old Nature, so I'm not up on what's being discussed in what topics here and was looking for a place for a link I thought was intersting. Straight Dope has a column on lead fishing sinkers poisoning birds: http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mfishsinkers.html Non-lead sinkers aren't that expensive. I'd like to see the lead ones gone.
{Nature_and_Environment.65.22}: annie {oceanannie} Sun, 06 Mar 2005 08:18:01 CST (2 lines)
Goodness, do they still sell lead sinkers? I thought the sale of them had been banned a couple of years ago....that's really sad.

Hi, I just signed up for this forum a few minutes ago and I'm just trying to paddle my way about. I'm in everyone's least favourite part of Canada (Ontario =p) and I simply enjoy nature. Anyways, continue to have a splendid evening.
