Solar Activated Linear Evaporation Systems |
{Nature_and_Environment.23.1}: support your local clothesline {wren1111} Sat, 17 Jul 2004 18:51:34 CDT (HTML)
If we all used clotheslines, we could save 30 million tons of
coal a year, or shut down 15 nuclear power plants. And you don't
have to wait to start. Yours could be up by this afternoon.

I use a dryer. Most do. Better smell, more control, faster, it rains, takes less time, cogenerates heat.

Design a BETTER mousetrap and people will use it. Its the same with cars. Cars are violent, noisy, add to the toxic waste stream, expensive, dangerous, isolating. But, WE have not designed better alternatives, so people still pick the best that they have available. Fast, flexible, available on demand, comfortable, intimate.

Of course it helps that I live where the humidity is rarely over 30%.

Solar. Useful, but limited. Useful, not reliable.

There are so many moderately hard-working, intelligent people who care in the world that if we stopped driving them crazy with other people's agendas they could do their jobs and set up usable regional power systems.

Its up there with "you can't rely on anyone else but yourself". For those on the grid, a solar charged UPS system is USEFUL. For the 99.98% of the time that the grid is functioning, PV and wind contribute but are not reliable. They are more reliable ultimately than nuclear, or hydro during a severe drought, or when fuels are literally unavailable.

How about wind?

Just surfing the Forums, but I had to put my 2 cents in about clothespins. When the weather outside doesn't allow outside drying, I use a portable clothesline indoors. It helps to introduce humidity into the house, which my plants and sinuses love. And, after all, it does eventually stop raining. So there is always the option of holding off on laundry until then.

Linear evaporation system, use it all the time. Our dryer (we have one... :) gets very little use. Only when something needs to get dry urgently. Clothes dry overnight in our washing room and we have lines on a 2nd story terrace under the roof (i.e. rainproof). Our el. bill is already 15% below that of the previous owners of our house.
