I drove my VW for close to 300,000 miles, 18+ years. Then my first
new car, an Acura Integra for 175,000 for 15 years. Now I drive my
wife's old Civic, 135,000 miles, 14 years old.

I plan to buy one more car new. I'd like a MINI but doubt it will
last like I expect a car to last. But since I want something fun, I'm
thinking maybe an S2000 or some sort of Subaru.

I had some electrical problems with the two Minis I drove, but
they've probably ironed stuff out by now. They're a blast to drive.

And I take it the S MINI for sure.

There are still a fair number of Toyota Corolla's on the road that are
over 20 years old.

--------

{Wheels.17.49}: Jil {rabbit} Mon, 01 Oct 2012 07:47:51 EDT (1 line)

Really? I don't see very many where I am.

These first came out about 20 years ago and I still see quite a few of
them:

Where are you located? I'm in an area that uses road salt, so there
aren't many of those left.

{Wheels.17.52}: Joe Gordon {darmund} Tue, 02 Oct 2012 01:09:17 EDT (3 lines)

Yeah, I don't see many Corollas, Camry's or Accords that are more than 2
model cycles old. I do tend to see many more older Civics for some
reason.

I have had it with old cars. Hopefully very soon we will be selling
my in-laws two old cars that are never used and just pile up bills
and my husbands old jeep to buy a new car that will be in
functionable order. The mechanics here or at least the ones we have
tried hang on to you and get a monthly wage out of you i.e. you send
the car in and it comes out with something new needing fixing so it
is never ever ending and I hate it.

What Jeep does he have?

{Wheels.17.55}: Periwinkle Slowtzer {periwinkle2} Mon, 29 Oct 2012 12:44:55 EDT (1 line)

Its an Isuzu Trooper...

Aha. It's not a Jeep, but those are great little cars.

{Wheels.17.57}: Periwinkle Slowtzer {periwinkle2} Fri, 02 Nov 2012 15:01:46 EDT (1 line)

sorry I call all 4 wheel drives jeeps incorrectly.

Like we say "Kleenex" for all tissues ...

I'm still driving my 20 year old Saturn SW2 as my "daily driver"
(see pic in my profile). Sadly, since the demise of Saturn corp,
GM's so-called "Saturn Authorized Service Providers" (SASPs) have
been fairly useless and have put a full court press on me to get me
out of my old Saturns (I also have a 12 year old LW300) by
overstating any problems they find, or even making some up. I am
sure others have experienced the same thing since I noticed a
precipitous drop in the number of Saturns on the road since the
dealership networks went away and the support for them dried up.
Just a few years ago, even older S-series cars like mine were
abundant, then in a span of a couple of years, even the newer ones
have all but disappeared.

Dead thread. Ah well. Still driving my now 21-year-old Saturn SW2. :)

So I see, by your profile. That's quite the car.

--------

{Wheels.17.62}: Jil {rabbit} Tue, 29 Jul 2014 08:26:24 EDT (2 lines)

Actually, I just realized I'm almost there. My Dodge Ram pickup truck
is a 1995. I bought it new.

Here's a picture of it, and a story I did:

Great piece, Jil! We've done the same with our cars. We buy a couple
year old used car and then drive and maintain it until it's
essentially been driven into the ground. We also make the same "repair
cost = x number of car payments" calculation, too, when it comes time
to do repairs.

{Wheels.17.65}: Jil {rabbit} Tue, 29 Jul 2014 12:49:18 EDT (2 lines)

Mine's in the shop again right now ... noisy muffler, and the brakes
are a little spongy.

My husband is driving an '87 Chevy S-10, which replaced his '85 when
it became undriveable (it's now a source of parts). I only gave up my
'85 Mazda RX-7 about a year ago...

My truck's getting new rear drums. The issues that pop up when you
don't drive a vehicle very much ...
